Seeing Olivia
An online diary of the week leading up to my trip to St Louis,  Missouri to see Olivia Newton-John live in concert for the first time in my life!
Monday, June 16, 2003:  Well, it's 7:25 am and my stomach is twisted in knots.  I should be asleep, but it doesn't matter as I don't have to go into work until 10 PM, so there's plenty of time for that!

So much is going on at work that could put my trip in danger!  Mainly someone quitting or calling in(which seems to happen every time I plan something!)  I'm tired of this as I can't seem to plan anything without some dark cloud hanging over it!

It's going to be an interesting week, full of twists and turns.......I won't rest until I'm back from the concert Sunday night!
Tuesday, June 17, 2003: 8:55 PM and all is NOT well!  Drama at work(what else is new!) is making me sweat.  Will I or won't I get to see Olivia Sunday?  Now the question mark is even BIGGER!
Wednesday, June 18. 2003: Whew......the drama has died down......and I'm a man with a plan......I plan to see Olivia sunday night!!!  It's looking good at this point......now to make it through a rough work schedule!
Thursday, June 19, 2003: Well,  I think it's gonna happen!!!  I'm so excited........but I'm looking forward with caution.......until I'm in that theatre, I won't believe it fully.........
Saturday, June 21, 2003: 8:50 PM  Well.....it's happening.....it's really happening.....if nothing totally out of the blue doesn't happen in the morning.......I'll be watching Olivia this time tomorrow night!!  I've got to get to bed as I have to work a bit in the morning(EARLY, 6 am), but after that....it's home to get ready and off to St. Louis....my sister Connie and I are going to make a day of it.....go to the Arch and have supper somewhere......I'm so excited, but I'm very tired right now.......so, I need to go to bed.........tomorrow's the big day......
Monday, June 23, 2003: Wow......Sunday was such  a great day.  My work day went as smooth as butter.....the trip went on without a hitch!!  My sister Connie and I left Christopher at 2 pm.....

We arrived early in St. Louis and found the theatre right off!  We drove around looking at the old buildings and enjoying the sunny skies and boderline HOT temperatures............

We were too early to enter the theatre, so we sat at a little bistro just up the street and "chilled" for a bit then walked around the street some more......the FOX has an interesting display in their window showing all the old stars and shows from over the years.........

Finally a small crowd was assembling outside the theatre so we quickly joined them.  We were one of the first people at the doors.  The St. Louis police showed up to direct traffic, which had me a bit confounded as there  were probably only 100 people gathered at the doors........little did I know!  She had quite the crowd!!

The doors were finally opened at 6 pm and we quickly made our way to the table with the souveniers........I bought a tour book and a magnet, but passed on the t-shirt(which I really wanted) but it was very expensive and I'd spent a lot already.....

The theatre doesn't look that big on the outside but is HUGE on the inside......we were up in the upper middle balcony, row "O"(very appropriate).......I luckily had a seat on the outside right by the aisle.  I'm tall and I like to sit in the outside seat when I go to the movies so I can stretch.....it also gave me a great view of the stage!

Michael Buble' and his band opened the show with a 45 minute set of songs from his albums and other songs. He really impressed the crowd with his renditions of some classic songs like "You'll Never Know" and "My Funny Valentine".  He joked with the crowd and let a girl get her picture made with him, very charming.........I had discovered Michael Buble' on the "Down With Love" soundtrack and quickly bought his debut cd(aptly titled "MICHAEL BUBLE') just a DAY before the ONJ stop in St. Louis was announced.  I knew it was a sign!!  I know he made a few more fans at the concert.(I was already a fan!)

After Mr. Buble' set, there was a short break to set up Olivia's band and the Fox Orchestra.  Finally, at about 8:10 pm, the lights went down and the  band started playing a medley of her hits with images of Olivia throughout her career flashing on the screen.......then......there she was opening with an a cappella version of "I Honestly Love You".......I'm not sure of the song set........I wasn't sure how I'd act with Olivia a few feet in front of me.........I broke out in a sweat!!  I could see her perfectly with my binoculars.......she was even more lovely in person than any picture I've seen of her.......fans started giving her flowers.

She sang a lot of my favorites.....starting with "Have You Never Been Mellow","Xanadu" and "Magic"....then I saw the boa and knew "Dancin'"(from Xanadu) wasn't far behind!!(one of my all-time faves!)  along the way she sang "Sam", "Deeper than the Night" a medly of her country hits("If Not for You" "The Banks of the Ohio"(another one of my faves)"Let Me Be There" and "Jolene"  PLUS she did that great Bossa Nova version of "Physical" which sounded great LIVE!......I screamed and hooted and hollered so much my throat was raw!!  My favorite, by far of the whole night, was "Not Gonna Give Into It", she really put her all into this performance!  A fan, who'd seen her concerts before, ran up to give her a bouquet and a single rose and she put it in her teeth during the instrumental part of the song!  After it was over, she declared."Maybe I WILL give into it"......she was worn out at this point......but took a sip of tea and kept on going.......

Finally the GREASE song set came and the crowd LOVED it. "You're the One that I want" really brought down the house!!   Finally, I knew the end of the show was near as she started thanking the band and sang "I Honestly Love You"  which she says is her all time favorite and dedicated it to all of us....then it was over.

The lights came up and I was shocked to see most of the seats below where I was sitting filled!!  There were all kinds of people.....couples, kids, men and women....young and old.......it was great!!

I decided that I had to have that t-shirt.......didn't care what expense.....this was an OLIVIA concert....you never know when that will happen again.......

We left and waited 30 minutes for the traffic to clear out.........there was a crowd waiting by her tour buses after the show and my sister asked me if I wanted to wait too, but I knew she was tired and I was beyond exhausted.......plus I thought Olivia was long gone....so we left.........

On the way home my sister asked what radio station that "guy" was from(Bill Clevlen who hosts Sunday night "Pillow Talk) and I told her he was on KEZK, so we found it on the dial, just in time to hear him talking about ONJ and the concert and how many calls he got from people who said it was the best concert they'd ever been to!  He played  several ONJ tunes as we were leaving the city and Missouri on our way back to good 'Ol Christopher, Il!  A nice finish to a FANTASTIC night......

Okay, the only downside of the evening.....the crowd that waited outside Olivia's bus got to get pictures and autographs......I missed out on that.....but God was with us and I think it was time to go as we got home safe and sound............I'm not complaining.......and I'll never forget this night as long as I live!!!

Me(at left) and my sister in front of the Fabulous Fox Theatre, June 22, 2003
The pictures are kind of grainy...but given the fact that I was several feet away in Row "O" in the balcony, I think they came out okay......unfortunately my pictures of Michael Buble' didn't turn out so well.....
Weird note.......as I was placing the pictures of the concert on this page, "You're The One That I Want" with Olivia and Travolta began playing on the radio!  I don't often hear Olivia on the radio anymore........that was strange!!
